Gritty to Pretty Art Tour
Friday May 1, 12:00-1:30 PM
Walk Lead: Jonathan Goldson, DHBC
Description: Discover how creativity has reshaped the heart of downtown on the Gritty to Pretty Art Tour, a guided walking experience presented by the Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC) as part of Jane’s Walk. This tour invites participants to explore the vibrant collection of public art installations that have transformed everyday spaces into meaningful, community-driven works of art.
Since 2015, DHBC’s Gritty to Pretty placemaking program has supported local artists in reimagining the urban landscape—turning once-overlooked walls, corners, and corridors into bold expressions of culture, identity, and storytelling. Through murals, installations, and creative interventions, the program has contributed significantly to making downtown Halifax more welcoming, inclusive, and visually dynamic.
Beginning in the downtown core, this walking tour guides participants through a curated route of standout artworks, including murals that symbolize transformation, celebrate community, and highlight local stories. Along the way, you’ll uncover the inspiration behind each piece, learn about the artists who brought them to life, and gain insight into how public art can shape a city’s sense of place.
From the symbolic butterfly mural on Barrington Street to vibrant waterfront installations and hidden artistic gems, the tour encourages participants to see familiar streets in a new light. Whether you’re an art enthusiast, a curious local, or a first-time visitor, this experience offers a deeper appreciation for the role of art in building community and enhancing the urban experience.
Bring your walking shoes—and your camera—as you explore how downtown Halifax has evolved from gritty to truly beautiful.
